And a sketchy black teenager runs up and starts interrogating me on why I was looking at the car. I said I was admiring it. He wouldn't quit aggressively asking me questions. I asked him if he DDs it. He responds with "why should I tell you?!" I mention that I too drive an old car but that doesn't change his attitude. I was scared he was going to get in a brawl with me. Anyways, moral of he story, not all car guys are nice so be wary. Oh, and this is why you don't order the vinyl top.

To him, you were scouting it for theft. White devil.

Given the recent climate, he was probably wondering when he was going to get shot for being unarmed :/

Shoulda just told him, "You caught me, I was about to offer you $10,000 for it. My mistake, sorry."

In his defense, it's an old crown Vic. Nothing special at all, so when you see someone checking out your plain jane junk car you get kind of suspicious.

"not all car guys are nice"
And not all car owners/drivers are car people. Personally, I wouldn't assume the owner of a scabby old sedan was a car guy.

He acted like a dick, but the phrase "sketchy black teenager" is a little loaded.

To him the car is just a beat up piece of junk that gets him where he needs to go. So he sees this random guy eyeballing his car and asking weird questions about it, what did you think his reaction would be?
Nice or not, I can't really fault the guy for being a bit defensive when someone was eyeballing his car. If I was him I'd have handled it differently, but surely you can understand where he's coming from.

It would be nice if we could get beyond using race as a descriptor. Most people wouldn't write "sketchy white teenager."

Just because he drives an old car doesn't mean he's a car guy. Most of the time, it just means you're poor. Especially if you're rocking a vinyl top that looks like that.

He knew his stuff. He said a thing about how the motor is basically the same as a fix bodies, and he talked about the fuel injection system.

Sorry. I wasn't trying to be racist.

I have no doubt. You're still in high school, right? I said some truly awful things back then with regularity, so you're very far from a bad person in this situation.

I once had a kid (like 13) run over to me and angrily ask why I was looking inside of his mom's car. I'll admit I would have reacted the same way if I saw someone looking through my window like that, but I told him (honestly) that I owned the same car and a few pieces were missing from the inside, and I was curious what they looked like. It wasn't until his mom caught up that he stopped trying to pick a fight.

.....I used that phrase all the time but then again I lived in Flint, MI where everything was "sketchy". White, black, gray, red, on fire.....Every person was sketchy. Hell *I* had some sketchy moments like when we used to sneak into the old GM plant parking lots and hold mini snowcrosses during the winter.

Actually yeah there was and still is a theft ring of whites and mexicans in the Detroit area who boost hondas by sending out "enthusiasts" to meets and getting details out of well-meaning car guys. The Crown Vic owner was right to be on guard, sadly.

Sounds like fun!

Yeah but in a city like Flint, there is no race. Bunch of white kids sneaking around in the darkness just reflect the flashlights better if/when the cops came looking for us. We all got busted one winter for drifting around some nearly abandoned subdivisions. Fucking G6 undercover car......Actually that was the second or third bust that winter but it was my first and we hadn't done much by that point so we just got the slap on the wrist and the talk and told to go home.

I would write that. Its just being descriptive of the person

It is, but would you really say "white teenager?" Run that sentence through your head a few times and see how it sounds. I'm guessing most of us would only identify the race of the person if it were different from our own. I may be wrong, though.

I agree. My comment was ambiguous because on one hand, I think a car journo should be easy to identify as such. On the other, an urban youth is on his toes, rightfully so.
